I have a confession to make – I love renovations. That’s why, when clients are torn between buying a new-build apartment or renovating an older property, I almost always lean toward renovation. It’s not just a personal preference — I genuinely believe in upgrading and unlocking the potential of what already exists. It's a more sustainable approach, and renovation projects allow me to tap into creative and technical skills that truly excite me.
There are many reasons to choose renovation over buying new — here are a few of the best ones.

When a Property’s True Potential Comes to Life, It’s Magic
I often find myself standing in rundown Tel Aviv apartments with clients who aren’t sure whether they’re even livable. These are the projects I enjoy most — the harder it is to see the potential, the more rewarding the transformation.

The Satisfaction of a Before-and-After
The apartment featured in the photos is a great example of a meaningful upgrade that didn’t require drastic structural changes. A central wall on the main floor originally separated the living area from the bedrooms, creating a narrow and dark hallway. I removed it and designed a double-sided cabinet in its place, housing storage, HVAC, and media. Open on both sides, it allows light and air to flow freely, giving the entire floor a more spacious and open feel.
More Freedom to Design
Small changes can lead to dramatic transformations — and they’re often easier to implement in older apartments compared to new builds, where developers can be less flexible. In this project, the original staircase was built-in, creating a closed-off space that boxed in the kitchen. I replaced it with a light metal staircase. Beyond the bold choice to paint it a striking blue, structurally this move opened up the space, added visual flow, and even made room for an extra cabinet that adds both style and storage.

Renovation Builds Your Flexibility Muscle
One of the most important qualities in today’s world — professionally and personally — is flexibility. And renovation requires plenty of it. When I plan a renovation, I always remind myself not to fall too in love with the initial plan. Surprises are part of the process.
In this case, I knew we’d need to raise the floor, but the big question was by how many centimeters — and which fill material would work best. That meant waiting until after the plumbing was installed and continuing to design in a state of partial uncertainty. Frustrating? Sometimes. But these challenges often lead to more creative solutions — and a bigger sense of accomplishment at the end.
My Tips for a Successful Renovation
Consult a designer you trust before buying – A professional can help assess if the property truly fits your needs and give you a realistic idea of timing and costs.
Budget wisely and prioritize – Even the biggest budgets have limits. Decide what matters most and be willing to postpone some elements for later.
Understand your own needs – I give all my clients a detailed questionnaire I’ve refined over the years. It helps clarify their must-haves — and those of their partner.
Don’t skimp on quality professionals – If you’ve invested in beautiful materials like special tiles, make sure the professionals applying them are just as high-quality.

Transforming an Old Apartment into a Stylish, Personal Home – Without the Fear
A well-planned renovation doesn’t just maximize the apartment’s potential — it creates a one-of-a-kind home, full of style and comfort. With thoughtful planning, creative thinking, and skilled professionals, the perfect transformation is closer than you think.
